The Studio

A Creative Studio?

Being Anything is my creative studio, it’s a place that is both physical and virtual. Where I work on the thin line between the meaningful and meaningless.

The art of combining

As my work shows I love to differentiate style and techniques. For some collections I spend hours with pens and ink, where others I spend days on my computers. For me it’s all about combining digital and traditional techniques. I can’t choose between the many way to create art. It’s all about mixing them up and creating new things that really excites me.

Kevin Philip

Set out to discover.

I see myself as an explorer, not the type that wanders to the far corners of the world. I lose myself in words, by listening to others and understanding what they are trying to say. We communicate our thoughts through words and give meaning to words and symbols so we can understand ourselves, our surrounding and the people living close to us.

I  like to discover new perspectives, thoughts or facts.  I  try to discover meaning in the words we use. Language is one of the most fascinating things about us human beings. I believe that the words we know define how we think and the words we use define who we are.  As we are progressing in life who we are changes over time and it’s definitely not set in stone. Words come and go as I see it our identity flows with it.

What is the meaning of this?

This has drawn me into philosophy as the ancient philosophers reflect on their lives and tried to put those reflections into words. The contemporary philosophers are trying to reveal and discover the meaning of those words. And language is changing slowly and the words we use change accordingly. This results in a shift in how we give meaning to the things in our life.

I see meaning as a creation of mankind, you can call me a nihilist. Life in general has no meaning, which doesn’t mean you can’t experience your life as being meaningful. For example your parenthood or you contribute to society in any way or find your job very meaningful because you simply enjoy it. That’s all fine and still your life doesn’t have meaning on it’s own; you made it meaningful. Which is a human creation and I softly add it’s an illusion that covers the meaninglessness of being.

This state of nihilism comes with struggles like anxiety and depression. And makes me doubt if my life is worth living. A question that reoccurs from time to time and I don’t have a definite answer for it. Although I understand that in the eyes of others this is not the most easiest way to live. My answer will be that I don’t want it to be any different, it gives me a certain comfort that I don’t have to seek meaning in my life. Life being without meaning is in my perspective nor negative nor positive. It is the most neutral state of living, which can be a little frightening, I know.
Let me add that nihilism is based on the concept of nothing but it doesn’t mean in any case that nihilists care about nothing. It is quite the opposite they do care about a lot of things, they are nor pessimists nor cynics. If you want to know more about nihilism I like to direct you to this book Nihilism by Nolen Gertz. Nihilism is the starting point to create whatever meaning you want to create.

An errors as occurred. Time for consideration!

I call myself the “maker of errors” but in truth we all are. I like to put those errors on a stand by making pieces of art.

Images and where to find them.

Searching the net for images.

Where do you find free and royalty free images?

Working with photographs, images and video comes with the challenge to find resources for usable and royalty free images. I like to share 6 websites that I use mostly for my work:

The meaning of Being Anything

The meaning of Being Anything - Why
I wish I could you a definite meaning, being anything = multitudes

When nothing holds meaning anything can be of significance.

Without going into a dissertation about meaning I will make it short. During my study of philosophy I learned that the subject of meaning is very problematic and one can devote his life to the study of meaning. To understand what anything means we encounter interpretation based on acquired knowledge which leads that I can create an artwork that holds meaning for me and nobody else. An insight that doesn’t make it easier but it was enough for me to know that I am the creator of meaning.
So when I make something it’s an expression of being anything, I decided what it is, what meaning it holds and if it is of any importance. I can be anything by making art.

With the absence of meaning anything can be made meaningful

A nihilistic view on meaning is the starting point of my art. Nothing is the base of anything meaningful. My art evolves around nothingness, the meaningful and being. Yes indeed, about being anything.

Why, what and how?

Knowing what kind and how I want to make art wasn't enough. When I make something and looked at it, the piece lacked meaning. Does this matter? For most it won't matter but for me it apparently does. The argument: "Making art for the sake of art." isn't satisfying me. Show the technical skill of an artist and resembling reality like the renaissance painter did wasn't either. So where do I find the answer to why I create the things I want to and will they hold any meaning?

2018: More creativity and the combination of traditional and digital techniques

A blank canvas and ink or an empty screen and a few lines of code.

In 2018 I attended a pointed brush calligraphy workshop and was hooked instantly. Making strokes of ink on paper were so addictive. I am still doing it for hours every week.
The graphics I create on a sheet of paper, I then make them digital so they can come to life on a screen.

Besides this I was learning graphic design in 2018 and fell in love with animation in the same way as I was as a child. Moving graphics on screen was the way to go and I started using Processing on top of After Effects. I like to combine everything I do and started to scribe it as
Writing ink on paper. Coding ink on screens.

The meaning of Being Anything - What
2016: Oscar Wilde said it before all of us.

Condemned to make art.

I later stumbled upon a quote by Oscar Wilde. His quote suited the meaning I was looking for. I was struggling to find my identity and wasn’t able to accept that I had to make art. I had the conviction that without any art degree I was unable to become an artist. But Oscar Wilde opened a door. He wrote this: “If you want to be a grocer, or a general, or a politician, or a judge, you will invariably become it; that is your punishment. If you never know what you want to be, if you live what some might call the dynamic life but. What I will call the artistic life, if each day you are unsure of who you are and what you know you will never become anything, and that is your reward.”
Which let me back to Being Anything.
I added the meaning of creativity and activity. Being Anything is an action that you can use to create, to think, to dream. As a constant motion that never sets into a vast form.

I need to attache a story to every creation so the specific meaning is enclosed in the story that is told. As of 2020 I tell myself: “I can be anything by making art.”

Finding out why we do the things we want to do can be a task for life.

2004: a first go and it's origin.

In world where you can be it all, you are nothing until you are.

As a teenager I had the longing to do something with a great impact on humanity. Although it was a foolish and naive idea by imagining the results. I came up with this sentence. Which shortened in a couple of years to being anything. The sentence never left me and kept returning when I didn’t pay attention to it.

The meaning of Being Anything - Begin

Beginning is the most daunting moment of the creative process.

What my mother said.

I was sitting at the kitchen table eating my breakfast while my mother was making breakfast for my brothers and sister that still had to come down. She turned around looked at me and said: "Kevin, in this life you can be anything."

Creativity kept following me

As a teenager I started writing a book and the story developed into a trilogy that never saw the daylight. Looking back it was a great way of expressing myself although the writing was pretty bad. I think that the foundation of "Being Anything" is laid in the writing of those stories.

Making it meaningful

Making it meaningful.

I want to capture a moment from what I experience and encounter in life. My form of expression is based on language. As language is the base of our thoughts, the way I like to state it:
“The words we know define how we think.” My work is an attempt to show you the ambiguity of my thinking. In the right hand there is this nihilistic and at times pessimistic worldview. And in the left hand you’ll see my struggle to hold on to life and create meaningful creations. Just take a stroll through my work and let me know what you think.
